Blockchain is an emerging technology platform for developing decentralised applications and data storage, over and beyond its role as the technology underlying the cryptocurrencies. Over two years of intensive research, Prof (Dr) Sudeep Tanwar, Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, authored the book Blockchain Technology: From Theory to Practice, which was released in June 2022 and published by Springer.
Here is an interview with the author of the book Prof (Dr) Sudeep Tanwar, Professor, Institute of Technology, Nirma University.
Q. How much time did you take to compile and finish the editing of the book?
A. It took approximately two years to compile the supplementary resources needed for this authored book.
Q. Who is your audience?
A. Blockchain technology comes with a significant advantage to academia and industry; for instance, its implementation leverages various areas, such as timestamping, logging of critical events in the system, recording transactions, and trustworthy e-governance. Also, multi-national corporations like IBM, Microsoft, etc., have already adopted blockchain technology in diverse fields, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Cloud applications, healthcare sectors, and many more. Given the vast applications of the technology, the book will be beneficial for undergraduate, postgraduate, PhD researchers and blockchain developers. The book will provide all information required to clear the certification in Blockchain Technology.
Q. What is your favourite section from the book?
A. I firmly believe that to master any new technology, understanding its fundamentals is very important. In that view, my favourite section is the first four chapters that discuss and set a stage to understand the basics of blockchain and help develop and roll out better applications.

A. The audience for the book is not limited to only the students or the faculty members. It shows the importance of blockchain technology and how it removes challenges that conventional technologies could not. Some of the advantages of the book are:
Q. How did you conceptualise and edit?
A. In early 2020, when I was teaching a course on blockchain technology to the MTech students, there was no textbook available for this particular course that included theory and implementation details. I faced difficulty acquiring the necessary materials and implementation details. Even the students faced problems in learning advanced concepts of this emerging technology. This incident made me realise the need for a book that explains the concepts and implements them in daily life. I contacted the Springer Nature publishing house and submitted the proposal for the same. After two revisions, they approved the proposal and set a deadline for submitting the complete book.
Q. Describe the most challenging part of finishing the book?
A. The most challenging part was finding supporting materials and implementation platforms that help formulate different sections of this book. Despite multiple web sources and available reference books, I couldn’t find the accurate information and implementation details needed for this book. Apart from that, balancing my research and academics was a little challenging.
Q. What makes your book different from the other similar books available in the market?
A. I have referred to many existing books on blockchain technology while teaching the MTech course and could not find a suitable match for the curriculum and the students who want to make their careers in this field. The existing books do not include long and short practice questions, multiple-choice questions, and implementation details. In this authored textbook, I have explained the core concepts of blockchain technology in a lucid language, easily understandable language for beginners.
Q. How did you oversee publication production, including artwork, layout, computer typesetting, and printing, ensuring adherence to deadlines and budget requirements?
A. Springer Nature, the publishing house, looked into the layout and other printing requirements. The initial guideline of Springer is to submit the book chapters in their specified Latex/Word format for ease in the process.
Q. What kind of research do you do, and how long do you spend researching before beginning the book?
A. One of my research interests is blockchain technology and published 100+ research papers, including SCI-indexed journals, IEEE ComSoc-sponsored conferences, and Springer databases. I also delivered many research talks on blockchain technology, considering diverse applications to the premier institutes of India and abroad, such as IITs, NITs, the University of Perpetual Help, and many more. Besides these research publications and talks, I also delivered keynotes at various international conferences worldwide, where the people from different countries and domains interacted regarding the implementation of blockchain in their fields and put-up lots of questions. In these ways, I dive deep into the blockchain concepts and their implementation details based on the feedback, questions, etc., received during the research talks and keynotes.
